I missed the last part of KL's set due to early-riser syndrome! But what I heard was as tight as usual. They debuted at least one new tune (maybe two - wasn't clear) that featured a great drum part. There was less of their proggy elements - maybe due to the fact that part-time keyboardists Matthew and Becky left their rigs at home and stuck to guitars (M didn't do any violin work either - at least that I saw). So most of their set had a "wall of guitar" feel to it (not that there's anything wrong with that!)
Noise gets better every time I see them. After a loose and shaky start, they finally settled in to some solid grooves - especially the parts where Mark's Hammond sounds and Sean's leads locked in together nicely. Wade is still not fully integrated into the group as a vocalist - he only sang a couple of songs.
FYI, they bravely attempted a cover of Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos last night and other than a few erratic tempo shifts and missed cues, they pulled it off! Sean played all of the synth leads on guitar while Mark just did the chords - and by segueing into the Squonk reprise from Los Endos, they avoided having to play the intricate stuff at the end of DOAV. I would like to hear Mark cut loose with some synth leads from time to time - give Sean an run for his money, but maybe that's not his role in the band.
The club is much smaller than CJs, but with our typical 30-40 person turnout, it felt full! I hope the 9-lives people were happy with the evening. Still waiting on confirmation of the April show. The sound system was fairly clean sounding. In such a small room, you could really hear the stage sound clearly, so the PA was mainly for vocals. keys and drum mics. You can tell that Curtis is once again at the board because he cranks his Asia CD full blast between the sets like he did at CJs! I wish sound guys would keep the between-band music at a conversational level - give us all a break from ear fatigue!
