Erik Hinds w/ Shaking Ray Levis
GFE & Friends
Music (euphonic productions)
9:00pm
$5
Erik Hinds of Athens, Georgia is a tireless advocate for improvised
and the other kind of music. He plays quartertone electric guitar,
Big Red harp guitar, and his devil cello: the H'arpeggione, an
upright acoustic instrument with 12 sympathetic strings. Erik focuses
on the raw sound of his strings in all their microtonal glory; his
style blends primitive folk, heavy metal, and sacred musics from
around the world into a distinct voice. Erik has played with
countless improvisers and performs regularly around the country, to
the delight of millions. Erik runs Solponticello Records, looks good
in black (the new salmon), and is obsessed with old-school arcade
games. His latest album, a solo acoustic H'arpeggione version of
Slayer's Reign In Blood is out now.
The Shaking Ray Levis is an ongoing collaboration of musicians with a
common interest in improvisation. The project was conceived and led
by the Chattanooga-based team of Dennis J. Palmer and Bob Stagner.
They use storytelling, synthesizers, samplers and percussion to
achieve their distinctive sound. They are the first American group to
have recorded for Incus Records, the record label of British free
improvisational guitarist Derek Bailey. Additionally, they have
performed and recorded with John Zorn, David Greenberger, Fred Frith,
Min Tanaka, Amy Denio, and Derek Bailey, as well as with many other
critically acclaimed artists. Erik Hinds of Athens, Georgia blends
primitive folk, heavy metal, and sacred musics from around the world
into a distinct voice. He has in the past year been a very active
third member of the Shaking Ray Levis, with all three pushing each
other into new and more open avenues.
GFE & Friends features GFE regulars Milton Jones, Robert Cheatham,
Scott Burland, Bob Hulihan and Jeff Bradley, augmented by special
guests, including Kevin Haller, Stan Taylor, John Lowther and more!
Entertaining!

Either way. This rhino stops for no one."

Sun Hong
Art Opening
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Free
Sun Hong, ink drawings on paper.
Opening reception.
Small Gallery.
Through June 17th.
For her second solo show, Sun Hong is displaying a series of ink
drawings where she explores the relationship between line and shape.
She limits her materials to black ink and white paper and keeps the
format of the picture plane the same, with the intent to concentrate
solely on the qualities of line. This is a departure from her earlier
works which consists of both paintings and drawings in mixed media
and bright color.
Sun is a graduate of the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University
of GA. Currently, she teaches art at LaBelle Elementary School in
Smyrna, Georgia.

Venus 7
How do you define sound? How do you defy sound? Ingrid and Dorothy
ask themselves this question every time they create music. Not with
words, but with the melodies, harmonies, and instrumentation that
they make. They have both been trained in music in various different
ways, but that training has left them with more ammunition to defy
convention, rather than forcing them to subscribe to the ways of
today's musical world. Venus7 is more concerned with being true to
the moment than displaying a polished image. This results in live
shows that brim with theatrics and humor, and recorded sound that
captures the essence of each second. For this, they have often been
labelled as "fresh", and they accept that--as did the hip-hop
forefathers and mothers that came before. Venus 7's sound is enriched
by their exploration of all genres of music. Their personal taste has
allowed jazz, rock, hip hop, funk, and soul to merge. Their sound
integrates the truthfully witty lyricism of folk music and the blues
with the edginess of today‚s urban (and suburban...and SUV) musical
scenes. Comical, individual, trusting of each other's genius, their
artistic innovation and versatility allows them to reach past the
boundaries of music today and into their own new musical dimension.
Welcome to their world.
Laura Lockie / Charles King Trio
Laura Lockie and Charles King have been working together for nearly 3
years playing and writing music that touches on all styles of
American music from the past 50 years. There's healthy helpings of
Jazz of the standard vocal variety, blues, rhythm, rock and even a
little Southern Flavor from the Allman Brothers days. Added to our
Gumbo is Derek Ransom-Akhi on keyboard and sequencing, percussion and
trumpet. We are putting the finishing touches on our first CD
produced by Jimmy Byrd.
May 28 Sunday
Across The Ocean In New Eyes
1thousand Holy Shards
Music
8:00pm
$TBD
A conceptual event in which music from foreign soils is rechanneled
and reinterpreted by homeland musicians.
North Carolina's August Hoer brings to us his unique brand of gypsy
tinged accordian music. His deft fingerwork and rich baritone voice
will tug at the heartstrings of even the most stoic of listeners.
Nag hammadi, from Birmingham, will entertain with swirly hypnotic
propulsion layered with standard Greek instrumentation including the
Bazouki and various percussive devices...yes, it's Middle Eastern
space rock. Although these two acts wear thier influences on their
sleeves, the end result is far from trite. Expect a lovely mind-
bending set from both.
Local band 1thousand Holy Shards will open. This will be the last
show with Jason for quite some time so supporters are encouraged to
come show love.
There will also be art work by August Hoer on the walls, Craft
workers and a DJ.

‘StoryTime’
Color Photography
Story Time rests on an overriding sense of ambiguity. Blurred images
deliberately steer the viewer away from any knowable identity or
narrative.
Without a clearly focused center, the photographs encourage the
audience to
search out the story by filling in the gaps, like illustrations to fairy
tales whose words have been forgotten or an old photo album found in a
stranger's attic.
