Joe Kubler and Sleeping Friends

I've written what I like to consider pop songs throughout the time I spent in high school. I think, on a whole, the songs are about immediacy - they are songs that try to be catchy, that try to be familiar on the first listen. Things that are familiar are easier to digest and easier to understand. I have trouble understanding the world and ideas that are in the world. Sometimes it can help to simplify something by turning it into a song that tells a repeating story in the course of five minutes. Though the song may not resolve anything, it helps me to think it does. Almost like doodling in class can make the class more interesting.
I have written a collection of aesthetic pop songs over the last year. This performance will serve as both a way for me to debut and retire these songs. I would like to move on to better things, though I am not sure if I will. I'd like to believe this would help. Maybe I will not retire these songs. But I'm trying to retire this mindset.

The performance will feature Matthew Gibson-Hatcher, Elia Eidelman, and myself. - Joe Kubler

Daniel Clay was voted 'Best Folk Singer' by Creative Loafing in 2005. By the time the votes were published, Daniel was building boats in Pemaquid, Maine where he re'maine'd for 9 months. The January 2006 edition of the Journal of Elementalism describes Daniel and his work as, "a fresh memory -- as if travelling to a perfect place on earth that you can't believe exists and then living there the rest of your life. Clay's songs provide aching glimpses into this more vivid world, leitmotifs for Abyssinia's soundtrack." Clay is known for his site-specific instrumental collaborations with Nat Slaughter and Brian Parks, playing acoustic and steel-string guitar on rooftops and in abandoned buildings throughout Atlanta and the eastern seaboard. His work with reed player Ben Davis and Keith Leslie has been called "...startlingly present. A call to creative arms in a society of armed ideologues" ( Journal of Elementalism, Vol. II 2005). His compositions are available on public and private records. He will be teaching boat-building classes in Maine this fall. danielclaymusic.com - Brian Parks
