So I totally see your point, but I still think MySpace is like a
shallow, poor copy of MP3.com

I don't think MySpace is a copy, good or otherwise, of mp3.com. That site was in a league by itself. I think the "band promotion" aspects of MySpace were an accident - not intended to be part of the original concept - a geek-socializing tool. Much like utility poles weren't intended to be a place for bands to advertise gigs! Mp3.com was a totally new paradigm, and I'll say it again, I MISS THEM!

Speaking of advertising gigs - how many of you have noticed the trend of "found object gig announcements"? For the past few years, a local psyche band , A-Fir_ju_Well, (anyone heard them? I hear they're quite good!) has been hand painting their gig announcements on old freight pallets and shipping crates and leaving them at strategic locations. I've seen Hip-hop shows painted onto old auto body panels or busted TV sets and left in well travelled medians. As long as they pick them up afterwards, I think this is a pretty innovative and effective way to reach the public!
