To say that hip-hop is "missing" this or that - e.g. melody - is looking at
it through the wrong end of the telescope. For that matter, classical Indian
ragas "lack" chord changes. What to make of that? The thing about hip-hop is
that it is essentially spoken word over a rhythmic bed, which makes it
enormously adaptive. Artists all over the world are infusing the form with
the sounds of their own cultures, with very interesting results.
