OK, then if I were to set this up, I have a few questions from people:
What if it were a nice (and free) BBS, but they had annoying pop-up ads?
Are people comfortable enough with anti-popup ad software that this
would not bother them at all? This place also has 2 other options:
A) I pay $30 for 6 months, and there are no pop-up ads anywhere on the
BBS. (users like you pay nothing - just give me doantions to help pay
for the site on a voluntary basis or something)
B) The users pay $7 for 6 months (not mandatory, only if you don't want
the popups), and even if my BBS has popup ads, they don't see them. In
fact, that user will not see any pop-up ads on my BBS or ANY BBS hosted
with that company.
Do any one of those sound feasable, or should I look around at other
hosting options?
OK, what would be good forums for the BBS
(again, for a reference as to what this BBS could look like, check out:
http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/
I was thinking of the following forums on the BBS (I think that this is
pretty comprehensive, but I may be missing something):
anything underlined with ==== would be a forum section, like "General
Forums," "Guitar," "Bass," etc. are on the link above
Anything starting off with a * would be a forum, much like "Open Jam,"
"The Music Biz," and "songwriting" under the General Forums at the above
link.
LOCAL
=====
* Gig Swapping - want gigs, need openers, have gigs and need bands, show
announcements.
* Live Performances - Good clubs to play? Bad clubs to play? Advice on
lights, soundmen, PA rentals, etc.
* Classifieds - Need another band member? Looking for a band? Got some
equipment for sale?
* Other Promotion - need/give advice about promo kits? CD printing?
Press kits? Etc.
Tech
====
* Equipment - discuss guitars, keyboards, mixers, lights, etc.
* Computers - software & hardware
Misc
====
* School - quetions on music theory? Who wrote what song on what album?
* Songwriting - self-explanatory
* Recording tips - Got questions about how to properly apply compression
to a track? EQ? Who makes good, cheap studio monitors?
* Other Bands - got a new fav CD that you want everyone to check out?
Everything that is not local
* Industry - rants, raves about the music industry. Industry related
announcements, etc.
* Everything Else - if it doesn't fit any of the other categories, then
post it here.
* Suggestion box
Once I set this all up, I don't want to ave to do much in the form of
moderation or maintenance on the site, so it will be an open,
non-moderated BBS. The only moderation I will do is remove
ianppropriate stuff (personal flame wars that get nasty, porn, spam
advertising, etc.). It will be open to ANYONE, and I will rely on the
prog folks to keep non-prog folks on the board centerd to the relevant
topics (IOW, if someone starts posting about Madonna's new release, I
expect the users to say 'hey, this is a prog-centered board. Please
post your Madonna stuff somewhere else')
I also don't want to go through the whole thing of setting it up and get
a total of like 5 posts in 3 months! People have to want this and use
it if I am to go through the trouble of setting it all up.
PLEASE respond with any comments suggestions, criticisms, etc.
Thanks,
Alex F/Brain21
