Just a follow-up on "crypto-reactionary":
I was posting to a thread in which the idea of
the "postmodern" came up, and a fellow poster
made a reference to Umberto Eco's idea of the
postmodern, with which I generally agree:
"recognizing that to simply be unselfconsciously
pre-modern would be naïve, and so
self-consciously and ironically citing elements
of the pre-modern in a revised and
meaning-altering context."
*However*... That conundrum wouldn't be a
problem for the artist unless there was something
inside the artist that *really was*
"unselfconsciously pre-modern". And so the
pre-modern swallows the modern, and we
erroneously call the result "post-modern" when
maybe we should be calling it "anti-modern".
