brilliance was they way they were able to take these very conservative
constraints and create works of lasting beauty and integrity, but
seldom would one of them try and break out of those rules and
conventions.

Not true, I think. The best of them were constantly pushing the boundaries
of their day. That's how we got from the Renaissance to Baroque to Classical
to Romantic, Impressionism, the 20th century genres, and beyond.
