[atlantaprog] WABE

This is something I'd like to bring to your attention regarding music
and culture in Atlanta. Last week Creative Loafing published an article
about local "media activists" who are trying to get Atlanta's public
radio station WABE to severely reduce the number of hours devoted to
playing classical music and to replace it with NPR talk shows!

Bach off, you NPR scum

This makes me sick. I'm sure these "media activists" are also trying to
convince their children's schools to cut out the music and art classes
in order to try and bolster their kids' standardized test scores.

Even though I listen to a great deal of talk programming on WABE
(Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Car Talk, A Prairie Home
Companion) I am very much against the idea of cutting out one minute of
the music. Where else can you turn on your Atlanta radio dial and hear
classical music (aside from sporadic programming on WREK)?

The term "classical music" embraces 400 years of musical material from
all over the world, or at least the parts of the world that come under
the heading of "western culture". "Classical music" is not one style of
music. It's hundreds.

In contrast, 95% of the radio stations in this town play nothing but
music from only the last 40 years or so, spanning American and British
popular musical output only.

Now some "activists" are trying to get the 5% of the airwaves that
represent 99.9% of our musical heritage to blot out that 99.9%.

I encourage everybody here to write WABE. Make a small monetary
donation and specify that your donation is ONLY to go toward their
musical programming.

Sincerely,

Wheat Williams
