Will I miss Tower? No probably not, but it does bring up a pet peeve
symptom of the decline of the music industry. I am not sure how the whole
thing works. I keep thinking we need a new music superstore that will
somehow meet our needs. I keep thinking that I could offer an affable
business plan that would succeed. I work in one of the big box stores now
and i am fairly unhappy with the degeneration of our music department. It
does indeed seem that those in music retail decided they did not have a
chance at beating the online dealers. Maybe that is so. I buy most of my
product from online sources now. But downloads can not be the wave of the
future. I have to work far to hard to get downloads and then there is no
solid tangible product afterwards. The thing that I will miss about Tower,
is the thing that I miss about music retail in general. I will miss the
connections that it offered for music fans. I will miss the ability to
browse and learn about the deeper titles. I will miss the businesses that
gave their employees a sense of free self expression instead of the almost
uniformed delivery of carbon copy employees that is the going business
trend. Despite prices, and staff that are not always aware of their
product, The loss of Tower, is another step towards the loss of hope in a
fast fading industry. We lost Turtles, Oz, Peaches, Best Buy has fallen
short of the mark, Media Play has fallen, Borders is peeling back. I am all
for turning to the independents, but there just are not that many left. Is
the internet the only rebound? Will we ever see the vast collections of
music stock on the browsing level again? There has to be a better solution.
