I can definitely hear a difference between 128kbps  mp3s and 256kps, or between 
128 (which sounds comparable to a casette)  and cd side by side, but I don't 
usually think, when listening on a  less-than-hi-fi system, that a 
decently-encoded 128 mp3 sounds  horrible-- just not great.  Usually the music 
itself is what makes  me cringe, not the presentation of it.

I suppose that the MP3 ought properly to be compared to the cassette, 
not the CD.

Yep.  My AAC of Gordon Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" (Shut 
up!  SHUT UP!) sounds fine to me.

Same here, alas.  Seems to be pretty endemic these days.  Not exactly 
conducive to more challenging music, either...     :-/

BTW, what about FLAC, the Free Lossless Audio Codec?
