Here's an article, quoting Bela Fleck, from August, front page of USA Today.
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-08-05-bela-cover2_x.htm
Notice where he says they get 70% of their income from touring, 20% from
records, 10% merchandise. Even if the records make nothing, he still has 80%.
And this is a a group that gets very little from publishing (sheet music, other
artists' cover versions on albums, public performance (radio, tv, foreign,
nightclubs)). These guys have it going on!

He also assumes that the band made no money on merchandising or the tour
itself. It might be *reasonable*, but I don't know if it's necessarily the
case that often--probably like many of the other figures he quotes.
A while back, I played with Richard Brunelle (formerly of Morbid Angel) in a
band that never got off the ground. I seem to remember him (or maybe someone
else) telling me that the other members of the band made about $30K/yr.
$35K/yr. when he was in the band, which might be $40K or $45K in today's money.
