[atlantaprog] Re: The Problem With Music

I've seen this before, too.

According to its own Website, this essay first appeared in a small "alternative" political magazine called The Baffler in 1993:

("Excerpt" as in "taken from an issue of the mag".) As far as I can tell, there's even more here than in the excerpt that Allen was able to obtain, namely an entire section called "What I hate about recording". Example:

"1. Producers and engineers who use meaningless words to make their clients think they know what's going on. Words like "Punchy," "Warm," "Groove," "Vibe," "Feel." Especially "Punchy" and "Warm." Every time I hear those words, I want to throttle somebody."

He also assumes that the band made no money on merchandising or the tour itself. It might be *reasonable*, but I don't know if it's necessarily the case that often--probably like many of the other figures he quotes.

A while back, I played with Richard Brunelle (formerly of Morbid Angel) in a band that never got off the ground. I seem to remember him (or maybe someone else) telling me that the other members of the band made about $30K/yr. $35K/yr. when he was in the band, which might be $40K or $45K in today's money.
