It was forwarded to me from another list. The numbers look pretty
accurate to me, except $8000 "tape costs"? The industry has been using
Pro tools hard drive systems for some time now and very few albums are
actually produced on "tape" anymore - so that DOES date the article a
bit. I also thought the video costs were a bit low.

From what I hear, hybrid ProTools/2" setups are still pretty popular. Look in
the Southeast Performer, for example, and you see numerous studios advertising
both. But yeah, the tape costs are high. I think one reel of 30 min 2" is
around $150. We used three when doing the LO cd. Even if you master on tape
too, it doesn't add up. And why does this band need new personal gear? Seems
like they'd have that before they got in a position to be signed.

Regardless of nitpicks though, the major label idea is probably not a good idea
for a band, unless they are a very mainstream to begin with or on a successful
indie looking to get wider promotion and/or distribution. I'd hope most people
these days know better than to sign the infamous "deal memo".
