Fatalistic yes, but I don't detect the nostalgia.
To the extent that he seems to think that the way forward lies in
going back to the past, maybe he's "nostalgic" (or just unwittingly
conservative). More to the point, he doesn't seem to see anything of
value in the last thirty years of music-making. I suppose that's
understandable, since what's worth using is so often put in the
service of mediocrity at best. But I think that's a problem worth
solving. J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote of "the perception of damaged
good in the corrupt", and I think that's a skill that we as a society
have allowed to decline.
