Thanks Hal,
To answer your question first lets say you have DSL for this first part.
To setup a station you have many different options, first you need to
decide which option is right for you. Setting up a station on your DSL
line requires the software for automation which depending on what you
use can cost quite a bit. I use a program called SAM (Streaming Audio
Manager) which costs $199.99. The program runs the automation part by
selected the rotation of the songs as well as sends information to my
website updating to the current track playing. It also creates the
playlist and allows for requests.
Second you need to figure out how you're going to stream it. Stream
hosting costs are rated by the streaming rate (example: 56K) and the
total amount of listeners allowed. If you were to setup a stream at 64K
with 10 listeners it would cost around $20 just for the hosting. In
addition to that you'd have to pay ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and now RIAA/Sound
Exchange.
You can avoid using any stream host, but remember you are using DSL and
you are limited to the upload speed.
Another way I found is to use Live365 and up until June 1st I was able
to stream at 56K to as many as 200 or more listeners. Since June 1st the
limit for the plan I am currently on is a maximum of 10 listeners. The
price is around $20 plus the preferred member to avoid the ads that come
across so my total for that is $25 per month.
If you include the DSL line into the cost and if course before you have
a DSL line you need a phone line too. I believe for around $150-200
(phone, DSL, and Live365) when using Live365 as the source you can setup
a station.
Lastly I'll revert back to the do-it-yourself section. Let's say you
didn't want to use any automation software and wanted to setup for 10
listeners at 24K stereo. You simply would need WINAMP 2.X, and Shoutcast
server. The shoutcast server is an add-on to Winamp 2.X that allows you
to stream using your computer as a server. I did this for a few months
at first, but found that when it reached close to 10 listeners there
would be major dropouts due to bandwidth limitations. Wimamp would work
as the player that would play the playlist and the shoutcast server
would send it to Shoutcast website for people to tune in. This way is
the easiest way to do it, but remember that if you setup your own
station and have your own website you will be required to pay BMI,
ASCAP, SESAC, and RIAA the royalty fees.
Royalty fees for the RIAA are 7 cents per song, per listener. You all
being musicians and by default the RIAA is your representative in
collecting such fees.
Lastly if anyone is using Winamp version 3 might I suggest going back to
version 2.9X for version 3 I don't believe sounds as good as version
2.9X and you cannot currently run a station stream using version 3. I've
actually been listening to my station using version 3 and closed it and
opened version 2.9X and found that the sound was much better.
You've just attended Introduction to Internet Radio with your host Greg.
