[atlantaprog] Re: Progress is being made...

First off, no email to the list for days, now I check my mail for the
first time in a couple of days and there is tons of mail. Cool...

I listen to it. In the mornings I spend equal time/days (not in one
drive though) listening to my CD/mp3 player, listening to talk radio,
and listening to the morning blues show on Wrfg.

In the evenings if I happen to be in my car from 7-9pm I listen to the
blugrass show (some of that stuff is so cool, and some of it I just
can't stand). They have a jazz show from 9-11pm everyday. I don't
listen that much, but one day a guy named "Captain Jack" or "Blackjack"
(if I remember correctly) substituted for the regular DJ on that show
and played some very cool stuff. Bootleg Hendrix, some cool Harvey
Mandel tunes, some cool Derek Trucks Band, along with a bunch of fusion.
That was the only time in recent memory when I came home, turned off the
TV and tuned in the radio to just sit there and listen to his show.

The station is hit and miss, but there is definitely some cool stuff on
there. I think if word could/would get out people would tune in.
Bumper stickers are cheap and good way to advertise.

This also goes for bands...

In the past I have done work with these guys:

Actually, they did the work for me, but I talked to them a few times via
email to work out some graphics format issues. Really cool, easy people
to work with. No I don't know them or anything, it's just rare to have
good experiences with people in this type of stuff, so I thought I'd
pass the info along.

They make stickers cheap, and they are good. They made me a bunch of
stickers which, coincidentally, will be referred to below...

As I stated at the meeting, my band's old singer had a definite aversion
to the term "progressive rock". He hated Yes, and didn't like Rush that
much (though he really enjoyed seeing Rush on their Test For Echo tour,
and he liked Yes a lot more after watching a 2 hour documentary about
them that I have on tape). Anyway, he hated that term, and thought it
had those same negative connotations that you know people think of when
hearing the term.

What we settled on (I kept telling him that Progressive simple means
'forward-moving' and that if you really think about it, two of his
favorite bands were really progressive: The Beatles & Led Zep - they
really are, depsite whatever predjudices the Prog rock scene might have
against calling them that) was "Progressive Music"

We had a bunch of stickers made (I still have a bunch) that say:

"Brain21
Original progressive music"

on them.

Another friend came up with a kinda silly description for our stuff
after we played a hippie festival. He said our music was "Hippie
Metal". Kinda Hippy in a jamming, psychadelic sort of way, yet with a
hard rock or metal edge. I thought thatthat was kinda cool. I made
another "logo" that we were going to put on another sticker, but we
never got around to it before the band disintegrated. That logo can be
seen here:

(yeah, it's derivative and silly... Oh well!)

As far as the radio show thing, find out more about it and the details.
I would love to be able to do a guitar oriented prog/fusion thing, that
would be so much fun.

Maybe the show can be "Hosted by the Atlanta Prog" group, and each week
we can trade off who will host the show/pick the music if several people
are interested in doing this. That way we won't have to have one person
with a steady commitment, we can trade off.
