If it weren't for Dragon*Con, I'd go. As it is, I kinda have to be at
D*C. :)
I suppose I could mention "bands of interest" who are playing Dragon*Con
this year.... :)
The Lost Boys (Matthew T.'s Rennie band), as well as their GA RennFaire
cohorts in Three-Quarter Ale, are playing on Thursday night (the night
before the con starts) in the Hyatt's Regency Ballroom. They'll also be
playing sets during the weekend in the Art Show and on the Concourse
(acoustic) stage.
The Changelings cannot return this year, alas -- they are perennial
Dragon*Con favorites -- but their spirit will carry on in the form of
Cats From Saturn, which is a new project consisting of members of
Changelings, Myssouri, and Diana Obscura. They're performing on
Sunday, last I heard, in the Regency Ballroom. Meanwhile The
Changelings' longtime violinist, also no stranger to Dragon*Con
performances, will perform at the Guest of Honor Banquet on Saturday
evening, as well as on the Concourse and in the Art Show.
Beyond that, the performers get less prog-oriented, but IMHO a lot of
talent remains. Godhead, whose new CD is far more rock-oriented than
previous goth-industrial outings, are performing on Sunday night. The
Last Dance, generally considered a goth band, have a good, hard-rockin'
live sound thanks to up-front guitars...and their cover of Dead Can
Dance's "Spirit" is terrific!
The Cruxshadows, from Florida, remained Dragon*Con's best-drawing
musical act last year (700-1,000), and are performing this year on
Saturday night. Last year's biggest-drawing live performance was Lips
Down On Dixie, the pretty-darn-screen-accurate Rocky Horror Show
performance troupe, who drew 2,000+.....at 2am.
This year, however, the audience-size crown will probably go to Ghost of
the Robot, James "Spike" Marsters' band (he's from Buffy the Vampire
Slayer); I'll be surprised if they draw less than 2,000. I've heard
they're actually...not bad. :)
SOMEyear I'll make it to ProgDay.... Or the Burning Man Festival, for
that matter.....
