Every so often the planets will align just right and I'll be in the
mood to listen to a Dream Theater album. Yeah, they're about as total
and complete a techno-flash overkill band as you will ever hear on
this planet and I wish to heck they would ditch the Steve Perry Jr.
vocalist, but their whizzy gymnastics can be fun on occasion.
As much as I try, I really can't get into Dream Theater at all. I feel
like they never really GROOVE. However, Liquid Tension Experiment has
put out 2 CDs that are fantastic! The 2nd one I think is the best one.
The groove on the opening track, "Acid Rain" is just great. Just watch
the speedomoter when listening while driving! The funny thing is, take
Dream Theater, remove the vocals, and put Tony Levin in as bass player
instead of John Myung, and you have LTE (Petrucci, Rudess, Portnoy, and
Levin). They are everything (IMHO) that Dream Theater are not. THey
are slightly less metal, but still very much in that DT meets Steve Vai
kinda vein.
