[atlantaprog] Re: Prog in NY Times (via Mars Volta)

Well, This certainly has piqued MY curiousity...K.C./Zep/Yes /Rush blend....works for me!!!!

Remember, though: "college-circuit emo band". The most "indie" of "indie-rock", so to speak. It's not a "K.C./Zep/Yes/Rush blend", from what I've heard of *De-Loused in the Comatorium* (a friend of mine has it); it's much more like an indie-rock band heavily influenced by prog than an Actual Prog Band <tm>. (The bassist on *De-Loused*, in fact, is Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, if I'm informed correctly. I don't know about this new guy.) In short, The Mars Volta has more than enough alterna-cred for the likes of Jon Pareles (who's been around forever, BTW) to sing its praises in public (while still propounding the party line about rock in the '70s. Out of touch? Then why were people still buying the records?). You should still hear it, though. (In fact, you should also hear Sunny Day Real Estate's *The Rising Tide*, where indie/emo meets latter-day Rush, even though SDRE fans themselves apparently don't like it that much. I find it hard to imagine that Rush don't know of SDRE.)

It is, however, *trés* cool that Cuneiform Records got mentioned in the *New York Times*. :-)
