Plastic People of the Universe
Rare US appearance by the legendary Czech underground phenomenon –
exclusively at Eyedrum!

Do you guys know who these guys are? They are the rock group that inspired and
motivated the intellectual dissident movement in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s,
which met around their illegal underground concerts. From this came Charter 77,
a human rights declaration in 1977. All of the signers were imprisoned, some
for years. This is the movement that successfully overthrew the Communist
police state in 1989 and 1990.

I've never heard any of their music, but they were supposedly inspired by Frank
Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

When Vaclav Havel took office as the first democratically elected president of
Czechoslovakia, after the Velvet Revolution (and before Slovakia seceded) the
first thing he asked for was for the United States to send Frank Zappa to
Prague as an ambassador. Zappa went.

Most of us on this list are old enough to seriously understand what the end of
the Cold War was like. Plastic People of the Universe made history.
