Allen, see my reply to this thread, Gunn is out, Levin is in... Aww
shucks, I still won't be there...
If I can't share this story here, well, where???
In the summer of 1978 UK (the original 4 piece) toured North America.
One of the last shows was a free concert at Penn's Landing in
Philadelphia. Well several of my soon to be friends went, but I
listened to/recorded the show on a local radio simulcast. Until this
point I had dabbled in listening to prog, some Floyd, some YES, a
little ELP, but nothing had prepared me for what i heard that
night... The "Album at Midnight" on that same radio station that
night was In The Court..." It was shortly after my new friends found
out that i had recorded the show that they started to turn me on to
King Crimson, Renaissance, Genesis, etc. etc...
It wasn't until a couple years later, after moving to the much bigger
ATL, that I became aware of the Canterbury Scene, and multitudes of
various other forms of progressive rock (thank you Fantasyland
Records)...). But of course by this time the tide was changing, punk
had already happened in England. New Wave, No Wave, SynthaPop, Noise,
and Ambient were all ready to pop... My life was changing, however
the record collection was only added to, not replaced. I still listen
to a fair amount of Prog, but mostly from the 70s. I lost that tape I
made on a hot night in 1978. I tracked down one of those friends that
had made copies... A truly wonderful story of reconnection for
another time. I recently ran across a torrent of that UK show. I
confess, I couldn't resist. The show still holds up. And every time
I hear Forever Until Sunday, I just shiver, and remember that
transformative night, for music invited me into it's confidence that
night. It would be another 5 years before I started playing music,
but that's another story altogether :-)...

recorded.
