[atlantaprog] Re: Music: sex, sleep, eat, drink, dream

I mostly agree with Veronica and Bill except for a couple of minor
things - mainly, I don't think I've heard too many people - in ARIA and
elsewhere - pass judgment on other people based on their musical
choices. Oh yeah, LOT'S of folks have passed judgment on other types of
MUSIC, but not necessarily on the people who listen to it. Myself, I
think what people listen to is mostly a result of what they're exposed
to. My college age son lives with me and one of his friends was over
recently and heard some of the Italian prog I've been into lately and
asked what it was. My son ribbed him for liking his old man's music,
but the friend said "so what, this is good stuff". Point being, if the
mainstream music outlets weren't so tightly formatted, I suspect prog
and lots of other niche musics would see a substantially increased
market share, while sales for some of those pop superstars would
decline - and that's exactly what the labels DON'T want to happen!

I don't know how many of you followed the internet radio royalty fiasco
last year, but it became abundantly clear that the labels were scared
shitless of an independent music outlet that they DIDN'T control, and
they tried their damnedest to KILL independent internet radio
(unsuccessfully - so far!) with a pandora's box of draconian fees and
accounting requirements. Greg can probably tell you a bit more about
all of that!
