[atlantaprog] Re: Moderation

Besides, there is just going to be *some* bickering. As long as it's at a manageable level, it'll be OK. Remember, "the perfect is the enemy of the good."

Well, yeah, but we *have* lost subscribers due to all of this - and that does not help further the goals of the list.

You know, I spend too much time on Usenet, and this sort of thing is par for the course (which you found out once for yourself, I know).

Actually, since I migrated to OSX last summer, I haven't had a good way to get to the Usenet groups. Yeah, I could go through Google, but that's a pain. I need a good FREE news-reader, but none that I've tried seem to work right. Any hints from you other Mac guys out there?

What I have to explain is that ill feeling is actually pretty low on many such groups; when people in newsgroups finally meet (which does happen--there are even yearly newsgroup conventions), they generally get along pretty well. What's on the newsgroup stays on the newsgroup. Why? Because deep down, those of us who keep in touch genuinely care about each other in the end, and we always remember that. I'm sure you've come across friends or colleagues or people in a relationship who it seems argue and fight all the time, but still seem to remember that they care about each other; well, that's often how it is in a healthy newsgroup. We understand that people simply will have radically different viewpoints on things, and in all honesty it's probably better that they have flame wars on a newsgroup than shouting matches or even fisticuffs in the physical world.

Good points, but I have experienced personal animosity from people who's disagreements with me stem from the way I run this list, and from things I say.
