[atlantaprog] Re: MP3s, CDs and DVDs

<x-tad-bigger>Allen, is it not a similar situation with JPG vs. BMP or TIFF files in graphics work? JPGs are very widely used due to convenience, but are an inherently “lossy” method of creating and storing graphic information.</x-tad-bigger>

A very similar situation - however when a jpeg is saved at "maximum" quality, they're virtually indistiguishable from a tiff. All of the leading stock photo house - Corben, Bettman Archive, etc. - deliver their product in high-quality jpeg format.

It's like the difference between 128, 192 & 256 mp3s - you trade fidelity for file size.

Re FLAC - I just downloaded my first flacs recently and once I found a way to play them, I wasn't overly impressed with their quality vs. other formats - BUT the source was an audience-bootleg recording of Tull's Passion Play live - pretty dodgy fidelity to begin with - so I can't give a fair assessment.

What about Ogg Vorbis?

<x-tad-bigger>And on a different topic . . .</x-tad-bigger>

<x-tad-bigger>My son gave me the other Animusic DVD for Christmas, and it is even better than the first one. You all should find someone who owns these, invite yourself over, and watch them as soon as possible. Or even buy them (what a thought!).</x-tad-bigger>

They're both on my wish list - but so far no-one has bitten! I still have some familiy to exchange gifts with, so there's hope! If I don't get them, I WILL buy them!
