In Coldplay's defense, I would like to quote Pete Townsend "every musician is a
magpie and a thief"
I Think this has more to do with the extremely simple harmonic language that
both bands use than any purposeful theft though.

Oh, I don't know. Pop music of any sort only lets you do so much, and the
simpler (or at least the more direct) the language you employ, the less you can
do. And we're in a time of <ahem> *extreme* simplicity these days. You're
