[atlantaprog] Re: Is this GuitarCraft or Scientology?

Interesting discussion! I can't wait for some more input from the
real "crafty" vets out there.

Actually, from my understanding as an outsider, GuitarCraft comes
from an entirely different mindset that Scientology or some other
cultish spiritual discipline - even though it does at time seems a
bit like the "cult of Fripp". Guitarcraft seems to me to come from
a desire on Fripp's part to share some of the musical and
philosophical techniques that brought him to the point he is at
musically. He apparently created it not as a means of self-promotion,
but rather as a genuine outreach to a community of people who truly
wanted to learn from him. It's interesting to contrast his apparent
revulsion at autograph seekers and backstage well-wishers with his
willingness to sit down one-on-one with fans in the context of
Guitarcraft... Yeah I know, he's making a few $ off of those fans,
but (correct me if I'm wrong) the costs associated with GC aren't
especially excessive when you consider that they typically includes
room & board, plus covering the costs associated with the event -
space rental and such. The participants come away with more than just
a warm fuzzy feeling. They come away with better guitar technique
and a new set of tools and strategies to apply to their own
musicianship.

Scientology, and other such cults, always seemed to me to be more
about some charismatic leader-type accruing power and wealth at the
expense of lost souls, who in return come away with little more then
the aforementioned warm fuzzies!
