Good to know there's a prog scene in this town...Hey, my name's Jeff and I've
been trying unsuccessfully for a couple years to join or start a modest little
prog band of some sort. I play six-string bass, and hope to acquire a Chapman
Stick, or some other type of touch-style bass instrument in the near future
(maybe a Warr guitar if I win the lottery!) I've got a little once a week jam
session going with a guitarist and drummer in the Canton area, which may pan
out into something. We'd love to meet other folks in this area with an interest
in prog/fusion. We're just paying for fun, and its a laid-back, no-pressure
kind of atmosphere. The other guys are into older stuff like Mahavishnu, I dig
new King Crimson (Trey Gunn era), Trey Gunn Band, David Torn, Ozrics, Secret
Chiefs...mostly new stuff. Here's a cool Crimson internet radio site if
anyone's interested: http://www.live365.com/stations/crim75
I stopped listening to radio entirely about ten years ago, but if there was a
cool prog show on WRFG or WREK, I'd listen. I rely on people I know to turn me
on to cool new bands, 'cause who has the time to check out everything that's
out there.
You could probably spend a ton of time trying to nail down a definition for
prog. For one thing it's music that takes a lot of imagination and
self-discipline to produce (and courage to play in bars full of angry drunk
bikers...). It also is takes a certain amount of effort to appreciate, because
it is less accessible to the ears of the masses. But if you persevere as a
listener the reward is merging with the creative mind of the music's creator,
and seeing a deeper connection with the limitless, almost spiritual
possibilities that music will always hold. It is the real "alternative music"
to all the banal, short-lived musical fads out there in the mainstream. I think
ther are milestones of musical exploration like Mahavishnu, that are classic,
but progressive music can never turn back to a safe formula from the past. Its
progressive in the sense of always being willing to experiment and delve into
the musical unknown, with no assurance that anyone else will "get it". I think
progressive music is an ideal to strive for, and it is very hard to actually
pull off with out some sort of compromise.
Good luck to everyone in promoting this type of music in Atlanta. I hope to
throw in my humble little contribution to the genre soon, if I can hook up with
the right folks. ------Jeff---- touchstyle_bass@xxxxxxxxx
