When I am down I usually WRITE music. Andante from Ictud (guido's Hand) is one
example of a song I wrote while feeeling depressed. I also like to listen to
Cat Stevens while Melencholy or Nine Inch Nails when really depressed. I tend
to listen to music that amplifies my feelings rather than hides them. It is
sort of a Get it all out therapy. Cat would be more of the musical hug.
Beethoven makes me empowered. Almost every kind of music makes me feel pleasure
of some sort. I dont listen to music when I am sick (my ears tend to get
blocked nad music hurts them)
Stories of healing music
this is a mental one...
I was 18. I just graduated from Highschool. My buddy (whose name I shall
withhold) and I had gotten caught shoplifting from K-mart a week before (no I
am NOT proud of that) I was grounded. I talked our way out of being arrested
B/C I was going to join the marines. I had just shaved my head in anticipation
of joining. My dad calls a family meeting and tells us that he is divorcing my
mom. I was crushed. I still was grounded so I couldn't leave my house. I felt
like I was going to go MAD. I went to my room and put on The PASS by Rush (off
Presto) I played the song over and over and learned to play the bass line and
sing it. The words were the only solice I had in my miserable life. To this
day, the song still makes my eyes tear up. I would also say that that song
falls under the communicates that you are not alone in this world question.
As for how do I listen. That is a tough one. I listen in several ways. AS a
passive listener (how most do it) where I hear the music but don't analyse what
I hear.
Activley where I am 100% focused on what I am hearing and picking apart form
technique etc (this is very hard b/c it takes all your attention and really
can't be done if anyone is around you) and also hearing but NOT listening- when
you have a song on the backround but are holding conversations, singing along
etc.

Hey folks,
I just wanted to issue another shout out for your stories and suggestions for
this weeks show. Essentially I am looking for your personal choices. So here
goes:
What music do you turn to when you need to feel safe? Which songs give you
the feeling of a musical hug?
What do you choose when you want to feel empowered? Do you have something
that give you a good kick forward?
How about your choices for music that makes you feel pleasure? Is there
anything that just makes you feel good when you play it?
Is there any song you choose to listen to when you are sick?
Do you have any stories of music actually seeming to heal you?
What do you turn to when you are depressed?
How about anger and frustration? Which song communicates the idea that you
are not alone in the world?
I have my own answers to all of these questions, but I would love love love
to hear what you guys have to say. This is not a scientific pursuit, everyone
has a different path within their sonic pursuits. I would like to know what
makes you tick.
Finally, I would also love to hear stories of people who have experienced the
following forms of musical endeavour:
Music Therapy
B.E.T.A.R.
Sonic Healing
Chanting
Holotropic Breathwork
Ecstatic Dance
Hemespheric Synchronization
Primal Scream
Subliminals
And my final question to you: How do you listen to music?
I look forward to hearing from you all,
Woody
