  Heya Atlantans,

I have been lurking on your list for a few months now. I play with Little
Atlas, a progressive rock band in Miami. I joined the list to get some
insight into how other similar bands from a similar-sized city were
  approaching self-promotion.

First, I want to commend you all for having the insight and drive to put
together ARIA and its various tentacles (including this list and the
website). Your passion for music and desire to bring it to the public is
  admirable!

Many of the problems you all are tackling are NOT unique to Atlanta.
Finding good venues to play is a constant issue here in Miami. Fortunately,
we have 2 venues that welcome us every few months.

Also, I am intrugued at how many progressive rock bands hail from the
Atlanta area. For us, we IS IT. I know of no other band that uses the
phrase "progressive rock" to describe their music in ALL of SOUTH FLORIDA.

Indeed, it gets lonely. Club owners don't seem to categorize us, however,
and usually stick us in with melodic rock bands, where we seem to do ok.

Which brings me to a point regarding the valiant attempts you all are making
towards putting together a Progressive Rock Night. Maybe the solution to
your problem of attracting an audience and gaining support is not to
segregate yourselves into a unique genre, but, rather, to position
yourselves with your "progless" brethren. Ask most people if they like
progressive rock, and they will say "what's that?". Play them your CD, and
they will be like "AH, I LIKE this!". Before a Progressive Rock night can
happen, maybe getting a wider exposure to a general original music audience
is an essential part of the education of the masses.

I offer up these suggestions without the slightest inkling of how the
original rock music scene plays out in Atlanta. So, forgive me if my
  comments are "been-there-done-that".

Relatedly, I would like to invite any and all of you to make a trip to
Miami. Hit Orlando, Tampa, Gainesville, or Tallahassee on the way down and
back. I have a few connections for a double bill or could point you in the
right direction for the better venues in our town.

Anyway, I will keep lurking. Keep on working together, brainstorming, and
  supporting each other.

  Regards,

  Steve Katsikas
