Heavier guage strings would definitely help.  For example, Stevie Ray Vaughan 
normally used .013 - .058 guage strings, which requires much greater finger 
strength for barre chords and bends than guitarists usually have.  (Typical 
electric guitar guages are often .009-.042 or .010-.046.)
