It all comes down to a combination of equipment and skill.

Bob Drake of 5uu's is actually a professional engineer (or was once); he was quoted (on his own Web site, I think) that if he had a choice between all the equipment he wanted and all the time he wanted, he'd take the time.

I think we're at the point where we can have really good electric guitar, keyboard, and bass sounds, and maybe good vocal sounds, out of the box. The sticking points are drums and acoustic instruments, as well as mixing.

I want the album experience. I want the packaging; something that I can look at while I listen to the music.

Sometimes I want that, too, but sometimes I get wrapped up enough in it that it becomes a distraction. I suspect there'll always be a market for *printed lyrics*, though!

...at least currently, there is still a market for CDs. With that said, I have also seen a surprising increase in digital download sales over the last two years.

Sometimes I wonder why some enterprising act with a big repertoire hasn't put their whole catalog on a flash drive!
