[atlantaprog] Fwd: DREYBLATT TO ASSEMBLE "ORCHESTRA OF EXCITED STRINGS" IN US

Hi ARIA list folks and selected others via cc -

OK all ya'll art music fans - mark your calendars - and if any of you are so inclined, you should hook up with the ensemble. This will be memorable.

I once worked with a guitarist in Nashville who used the "excited string" techniques - basically he would have his acoustic guitar tuned to an open chord, then he would rapidly strum the open strings back and forth with the pick just grazing the surface. After a few moments, his guitar would emit the most luscious harmonics and overtones - just a wall of shimmers! He tired to teach me the technique for my mandolin, but I could never quite get it to break into overtones.

DREYBLATT TO ASSEMBLE "ORCHESTRA OF EXCITED STRINGS" IN US

21 April 2006, Berlin

Berlin-based composer ARNOLD DREYBLATT seeks musicians for a new, US
version of his legendary ORCHESTRA OF EXCITED STRINGS.  The group will
headline a forthcoming Table of the Elements festival in Atlanta,
scheduled for September 1-3, 2006.  The event promises to be a
vigorous, richly textured romp, emphasizing dynamics and sonorities to
stunning acoustical effect.

This version of the orchestra will likely consist of three
contrabasses, two cellos, two violins, two electric guitars and one
percussionist.  Varying skill-levels are welcome, and excessive
virtuosity is not necessary.  Rather, each participant should have
focussed concentration, a well-developed rhythmic sense, a keen ear for
harmonic overtones and a willingness to follow precise instruction.

Ensemble members must commit to the following schedule:  An informal
meeting and discussion with the composer will take place in Atlanta on
Thursday, August 31, 2006; two days of rehearsal follow, on Friday,
September 1 and Saturday, September 2; the concert is the evening of
Sunday, September 3.

Contrabasses will be restrung by the composer during the day of
Thursday, Auguist 31; they will be returned to their original state on
the morning of Monday, September 4.  Ensemble members must provide
their own instruments and secure transportation and accommodations for
themselves within the metro-Atlanta area.

Anyone interested in joining the orchestra can send a message via the
Arnold Dreyblatt MySpace page or contact Table of the Elements at the
below address.  Thanks in advance for your participation and support.
See you in Atlanta!
