It's normally the first Thursday of every month at Eyedrum. This month is a bit different. To become a performer, just show up with your instrument. Find Robert Cheatham and let him know you want to play. The musical styles vary according to who's onstage. I've heard free-jazz, Frippertronics-style soundscapes, atonal noise, electronica, ambient, etc. Even a folk singer and a few free-verse poets once in awhile.
Here is a post I made about it last month:
I just came back from sitting in at my first Eyedrum open improv night, and I must tell all of you folks looking for musicians to play with, this is a potential goldmine! Twenty or so musicians of all types all take turns going up onstage and improvising in twos and threes for about 5 minutes each. Other musicians come on from time to time, and others go off, and in the end everyone is up there and the organizer of the event, Robert Cheatham, stands out front and conducts everyone into an amazingly coherent soundscape. There were two electric bassists and one acoustic bassist, a theremin player, four or five guitarists, two sax players, a couple of trumpets, three or more vocalists (strangely no drummer tonight), and though there were moments it approached dissonant chaos, more times than not it was sublime. They do this every month and they say it's different every time. Sometimes there are more jazzers, other times the rockers dominate, sometimes it's noisemongers and techno heads, but Robert keeps everything balanced and in perspective.
One thing that surprised me was that many of these people weren't in regular groups. So any of you looking for interesting players to work with, this might be a good resource. Visit the Eyedrum (eyedrum.org) website and you can find out when the next one is happening.

Hi Iam new to this list serve. I live in Columbia Sc and Have to say this looks like a fun event. Can you tell me more about it. How do you become a performer? What types of music a played? Is it Improv or do the performers rehearse for it. I play upright bass and electric bass. I ahve a masters in upright and I am always looking for cool places to play. Is it every Friday? Or at least on a regular basis. Do you have to sign up in advance or do performers just show up?

yes, friday at the Contemporary
not thursday at eyedrum
many of you have seen the announcements for this but I'm making a
pitiful plea to the performers this time to please show up for this.
There is a core of you who come on a semi-regular and others who are
probably clueless (e.g. myself) but who would like to participate.
If you don't know where the Contemporary is go to
http://www.thecontemporary.org --it's down marietta street past CNN
center, left on means st at the Engineer's Bookstore
Format will be the same as usual: solos, duos, or trios for the first
hour or so, (duration 5 minutes please), expanded sets thereafter, then
concluding with a conduction...theme is 'All Mixed Up'.
Here's the pitiful shameless bribe part: first 14 performers to show
up get a free copy of the new conduction compilation, GETTING FREE.
(see either below or attachment)
same glorious hoo ha as always.
starts at 9 by the latest, if yr stage bound, please try to get there
by 8:30 at the latest (though I know that many can only come later).
see you there..
...and make sure you've taken your meds
