Downloads just don't sound very good, though. Yeah, the technology will
probably improve, but there's still more to albums than just the music.
There's
that whole mystique...power, mystery, the hammer of the gods...that comes with
the purchasing of an artifact, closing yourself in, slipping into the player,
immersing yourself in the thing and developing an attachment to not only the
songs, but to the sequence of songs. You can't get that from a CD burner, a
stack of CDRs and a Sharpie.
Of course, right now I am still reeling over the fact of Brian Wilson
performing Smile.
The whole business of "closure" has become a total pop psychology cliche, but
I just find it so cool and inspirational that Brian Wilson can go back to
this great, legendary, lost piece of music that he simply couldn't finish in
1967
that contributed to his eventual nervous breakdown and not only finish the
bugger off, but perform it live in front of a crowd that, from all reports, was
ecstatic. I can't wait for the eventual CD release.
