[atlantaprog] Re: Fripp Escapade

Didn't go, and actually felt little desire to do so. While Fripp does very nice soundscape work, to this listener, what he does is little different than what just about every other ambient musician with a looping device has done for years. I remember, during Harold's tenure with Z-Axis, I would arrive at his house for rehearsal and he would be warming up by making ambient loops with his gtr. The Fripp soundscapes I have heard were no better or worse that what Harold was simply noodling around with. It would have been interesting to hear his Q&A, but my sense is that it was likely pretty rehearsed and would likely cover the same ground I heard him cover many times in his diaries, etc.

In short, my free evenings are few enough as it is, and I'm very particular about how I choose to spend them - and frankly, I can think of better things to do with $25!

From Fripp's diary:

"As we were leaving the theatre, several people offered kind words, other than one character: I’ve never felt so ripped off in my life! It’s only quarter to ten & you talked for half of that. Long & cruel experience has suggested that there is little value in reasoned dialogue with someone locked in reactive anger; although that is also an approach I have used. Tonight, I might have pointed out that very few people can take Soundscapes for 30 minutes, even fewer for 45, so at just over an hour of bleeping & droning, better to be kind to the audience & leave it at that. But instead I say nothing to him, continuing instead a conversation with a pal that the he was interrupting & overlaying with his consumerist complaint."

OK,
I'm not quite sure what to make of Fripp's Performance the other night. He started spot-on at 8:30pm, played a 32 minute soundscape. Stopped, chatted with the audience Q&A style for about 25 minutes, took a 5-6 minute intermission, returned, and did another 30 minute soundscape (that sounded awefully similar to the first one) then quitely put his guitar down and left the stage while his last soundscape sloooooooooooowly faded out.

I saw a few of you guys there. What did you make of it. I kind of felt short-changed by the whole event.......Harold
