[Steve Howe's] use of the Line 6 Variax guitar on the current Yes
tour is, to put it in perspective of his personal life, the
equivalent of Hell freezing over....
The Line 6 Variax is not an expensive guitar. They are assembly-line
made in Korea and the street price is $800; they can sometimes be
found on eBay for as little as $500.
That might've been true for the original Variax, but the one he was
using Wednesday night was clearly the latest model, going for $1400
in the Musician's Friend catalog. Definitely a nicer guitar, this
was, with a Baggs tremelo (whose arm I didn't see on Howe's model)
and (the way I remember it) a transparent green finish (with a hint
of blue) that's not even mentioned in the catalog. Certainly as good
a guitar as, say, an American Strat. For those who weren't there, it
was mounted on a steel arm protruding from the stand holding his
Fender pedal steel; the arm could be pivoted to get the Variax out of
the way when needed.
