[atlantaprog] Re: First Prog Album / Instrument

Well, it was like this:
At 13 years old I was head over heels infatuated with
a girl in my class who was very much into The Beatles,
so it all started there. The first album I bought was
Queen - News Of The World. My next door neighbor
heard me playing it through my open window, and said
that if I liked that then I should listen to Kansas.
So Leftoverture was next. My local Stop & Go (similar
to a 7/11) actually carried albums, so I saved my
money to buy one called The Wall. Soon after we moved
to California, and my nephew turned me on to FZ's
Apostrophe' and 2112...but still I didn't know that it
was progressive. It wasn't until a few years later
that a friend introduced me to Yes - Drama that I
started thinking that this wasn't "normal
rock"...after all, my friends were listening to Motley
Crue, Scorpions, and Van Halen. I finally learned the
term "prog" from a friend of mine who worked in a used
record store. He turned me onto (in order),
Marillion, IQ, Twelfth Night, King Crimson, and Gentle
Giant. The rest is history.

As far as being a musician, I started playing
keyboards about the time I learned to walk. I started
on a Magnus chord organ at age 4. I was playing
telethons, nursing homes, malls and state fairs as a
solo organist by age 13 (when I discovered rock!) and
decided I would rather play in a band. I played bass
guitar for a few groups before moving back to keys.
Finally in high school that started going
somewhere...I was in a group that (briefly) got a fair
amount of radio airplay in Northern California. It
was hair metal before it became fashionable (if it
ever was!) Then I went to music school, went through
several bands, and had several nice opening shows
(Kansas, IQ, Brand X, Vanden Plas, BOC, Montrose, and
Enchant to name a few). Now I am building a studio in
my home which will be done in January (my recording
deck goes on order next week!), at which time work
will begin on an album proper with my yet to be named
group. I don't really know if our style is prog or
not, it is definitely different!
