[atlantaprog] Re: First Prog Album / Instrument

<1. What was the first album that got you into progressive rock?

That's a tough one for me... In one week in 1976 (at the age of 14) I was
introduced to Yes' "Close to the Edge", Genesis' "Foxtrot" and ELP's "Brain
Salad Surgery". I had become a big Beatles fan the year before and had
dabbled in a little ELO, but in one week all of my concepts of what music
was all about was shattered. I remember the friend who lent me his copy of
"Close to the Edge" taping a cassette copy for me the following week and I
must have listened to it a couple dozen times, playing it for my brother and
every other friend of mine for the next 2 weeks. The next weekend I went to
a used book/album store and bought up every Yes and Genesis albuim I could
find (I thought the ELP was cool, but it didn't inspire me like the others).
I also saw Pink Floyd on their "Animals" tour around this same time and the
deal was thoroughly and completely done - my musical fate was sealed!!

<2. For those of you who play instruments, why did you choose that
instrument rather than another?

I never learned to play an intrument "proper", although I have played "at"
playing bass for over 20 years. I have become extremely involved in the
recording and production side of Man On Fire over the last few years and
write the band's lyrics. My dad is a Grammy Award winning producer (record
of the year - 1970) and I grew up in recording studios, making me very
comfortable in that environment.
