[atlantaprog] First Prog Album / Instrument

1. What was the first album that got you into progressive rock?

It was gradual. The first album that was at all progressive that I really
got into was "Synchronicity" by The Police. Led Zeppelin IV and "Fire of
Unknown Origin" by Blue Oyster Cult came next. That led to Rush and Yes. I
was in a record store one day asking for bands like Rush, the guy told me
that I should check out Gentle Giant, so "Octopus" by Gentle Giant was, I
guess, the first progressive rock album that I picked up by a band that I'd
never heard on the radio and that is what led me to the prog underground.

2. For those of you who play instruments, why did you choose that
instrument rather than another?

I saw a U2 rock block on MTV (back when the "M" stood for "Music"). I loved
"The Joshua Tree" album and decided that I wanted to play keyboards! I
recruited a friend of mine to play drums. He knew a guy who played guitar
so we decided to be a band. Before I picked up a keyboard, the guy who
played guitar told the drummer that we needed a bass player, but we could go
without a keyboardist, so I volunteered to play bass instead. I'm very glad
that I did, because after playing keyboards later, I discovered that it
really just wasn't the thing for me.
