[atlantaprog] Re: Controversy

This Owl will poke his ever lovin' beak in:

Playing guitar is meaningless without crunchy distortion. PodXT my
arse...I need a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.

AMEN BROTHER!!!! OK, POD's are good for recording, especially if you're an
apartment dweller BUT still, there is just NO SUBSTITUTE for the scorching warm
sound of overdriven tubes (valves on the other side of the pond). My personal
preference these days is a Traynor CV-40 all-tube amp with a single 12"
Celestion. It may be only 40 Watts but it's the LOUDEST and warmest 40 watts
I've ever heard. I've tried solid state amps, WIMPY AS THE DEVIL, no oomph or
guts. Give me tubes or give me death!!!

Did Trevor Rabin save Yes or ruin it?

Ruined it beyond all possible repair, just strictly creatively speaking. Trevor
himself wasn't much more than a very generic pop/rock guitarist who just
happened to be in the right place at the right time. He can play, yes, but
there's just nothing special or unique about him that you haven't heard from a
thousand other guys do. Commercially, he pumped up their bank accounts like
never before, but once the generic pop virus gets in one's system, it's a
bastard to get rid of.

Sheet music is a crutch for people who can't improvise.

ROTFLMAO!!!! Just like lyrics are wasted time between solos
Seriously though, for me, I'm more of an "ear" guy though I can read some (not
great though). Nothing against reading music like a hawk (I'm envious of peole
who can pick off complicated passages on the first try) but I think musicians
who are strictly by-the-book rob themselves of a very rich experience that can
only come in the improvisational realm. If one stays in the strictly by the
numbers realm, you cut off a whole side of your potential creativity. For me,
writing music on paper is just simply a means of communicating an idea, not the
end in itself.
