[atlantaprog] Re: Caravan & Nektar Wednesday night!!!

Wish I had been able to go but were too sick. Loved the Caravan albums but
never saw them. Was Nektar not with the original lineup?

Nektar was the third concert I ever saw (spring of 1974 I think), at the old
MunicipaL Auditorium. It was the Down to Earth Tour. Six tons of lights said
the extensive promotion on 96 Rock at the time. It was well attended as a
result. When the lights went out, everyone scooted the attached seat rows
forward as the first row had been fifteen feet from the stage. My third row
seat became a place next to the stage. The jumble resembled an odd looking
traffic jam or perhaps a post accident freeway alignment with rows facing
every which way.

What an experience! It was also my first fog machine encounter up close and
personal. First eight string guitar (last, also?) too. Definetely a vibrant
living band then. The light show was spectacular and controlled by the fifth
member of the band, Mick Brockett, who apparently had rigged an actual
keyboard to trigger this amazingly synchronous projection collage. I have
yet to see visual projection used so masterfully in integration with music
as this man did with such primitive tools. Think much more elaborate than
Jon Anderson's show at the Variety this year. He seemed to have all the
skills of a keyboardist or maybe he was playing one literally in between
triggering lighting events. He was situated in the middle of the audience
right next to the soundboard.

The next year I was so excited to get first row, center tickets.
Unfortunately there was no similar promotion and concert was cancelled for
lack of sales. I am pretty sure the tickets cost under seven dollars each.
Wow!

Amazing Lizardo
