[atlantaprog] Re: CD Manufacturing

Hi Brian (and others),

Make sure your graphic design friend is a stickler for detail and
precision and follows the manufacturer's guidelines precisely. Make
sure he understands about fonts, bleed, resolutions, line screens,
etc. All of the nit-picky production details that many graphic
artists tend to leave for the printers/service bureaus to handle.
Otherwise you could be stuck with some BIG graphic production fees
from the manufacturer.

Many people can create a great looking design in Quark, but they
don't understand the intricacies of the file-output and printing
processes. Not intended as a slight on your friend... it's standard
operating procedure for many designers to allow the production people
to handle the tech details. CD manufacturers want a bullet-proof file
to print. They receive incorrect graphics files daily... and the
close tolerances of the CD labeling and booklet stuffing machines
don't leave much room for error. Then the customer complains about
unexpected file-handling charges, or something not looking right....
blah blah blah...

I can help. Before I branched into web design, I did (and still do)
print graphics. I've even done time in the trenches of a graphic
service bureau so I'm well aware of the common mistakes people make.
I'd rather not be the one the come up with the "look" of your piece,
but I'll give you a reasonable rate for assembling the files and
handling the tech stuff if your fried doesn't feel comfortable with
all of that.
