This also depends on what you are giving them. Ask specifically and
don't assume. If ou want them or some one else to do the layout are you
just gonna describe it to them and let them do it (like your graphic
designer)? Sure they can do it in Quark, but have them check first.
There are a couple of reasons why:
- Some places are switching from Quark to Adobe InDesgin, or are able to
handle both. I don't know about Quark Xpress, but with most Adobe
products the native file format for that program is the same, weather it
is on a Mac or a PC. You can create a Photoshop document on a PC for
example, and it will open up on a Mac exactly like you saved it. IOW,
it may not be necessary for the graphic designer to be running on a Mac
- Some places would rather have a single .tif (TIFF) file than a layout.
If that's what they want (this is what I have always given print
companies cause I think that dealing with TIFFs is far easier than
dealing with a Quark layout!) then be sure to get the proper specs from
them ahead of time. Ask if they need a PC formatted tiff or a Mac
formatted tiff. Adobe Photoshop can save in and open EITHER format.
- Some guidelines on resolution:
If the file is JUST an image or piece of artwork, give it to them at 300
DPI. If it has text on it (unless they are big letters like a title or
band name) then you want that booklet panel to be at 600 dpi. Small
text (something like lyrics, liner notes, etc.) at 300 dpi will just be
too blurry when printed out. If the page is a combination of both, then
do it at 600 dpi.
You really need to know all of this FIRST before starting the design,
otherwise it could cause you headaches later.
