[atlantaprog] Re: Bela Fleck

I was friends with Bela Fleck and the band when they were just getting started circa 1990. Their success is certainly deserved--they are brilliant, brilliant musicians. But let's not forget that they are exceptional in every sense of the word. Their music has always been wildly un-commercial and experimental. How many successful ensembles with a banjo at the helm can you think of that don't play bluegrass? Then add up the fact that Bela and company are more successful than all the banjo-led bluegrass bands put together.

It's a miracle that they succeed at what they do, and that they have found a loyal audience. But it couldn't happen to a nicer, more talented bunch of guys.
