[atlantaprog] Re: Attendance Policy for CJ's

Hi Everyone,
I completely agree with Matthew on this one and I think Matthew is way too
nice of a guy to say something this blunt, so I will:

If the members of A.R.I.A. aren't going to make time to be at these shows
then it is absolutely ridiculous to expect anyone else to be there.

It's frustrating to me that asking one member of each band to show up each
month if they want their band to play is being met with any kind of
resistance at all. When we have played Cobweb Strange shows, if you guys
aren't there then it's pretty empty. When I'm at your shows, it's the same
deal. No one from Cobweb Strange can be at the shows because we have gigs
as McFly on Thursdays, so Cobweb Strange should NOT be put on the bill if we
DO end up with a night off. If I have a night off, I'll be there supporting
whoever is playing (all four of us would probably be there), but if someone
from Band XYZ has been there supporting this thing every month, they should
be up on stage that night, not us. It seems logical to me. If EVERYONE in
your band can make time to play at the shows, I would think that ONE of you
could make time to be there to support everyone else. Matthew is only
asking for ONE person from your band ONE night a month. If you can't do
that, fine, show up to support the other bands when you can and let people
who support the event regularly perform.

As for other promotion, I really do hope that everyone in this group helps
to promote the events by whatever means possible - regardless of whether or
not they are playing. However, even if we put out 10,000 flyers, have a
dedicated website, get an article in the Creative Loafing and send emails to
all of our email lists, I think it's totally unrealistic to expect enough
people to show up to keep this thing going who aren't either Band / A.R.I.A.
members or friends of one of the bands playing. We put on a two day
festival this year ON A WEEKEND and I suspect that there weren't 20 people
there who weren't either band members, A.R.I.A. members or friends and
family of one of the bands performing. Does anyone really expect that there
will be a significant number of people out on a Thursday just to see just
two of us because they saw a flyer? If you really think Matthew's plan is
unrealistically harsh because you, a fan of this music and a member of this
community, don't think that one member of your band can be at each show, how
can you possibly expect someone with less of an interest in our community to
support these events?
