[atlantaprog] Atlanta Prog listserv now active!

Hi folks,

I have subscribed everyone that was at the Monday night meeting, or
has otherwise expressed interest in what we are doing, to this new
listserv. To send a message to the Atlanta Prog listserv, simply send
it to atlantaprog@xxxxxxxxxxxxx and everyone will see it

The listserv is open to anyone who has a desire to help us achieve
our goals of making Atlanta a prog-friendly town... so pass the word
on to anyone you know who may be interested. The next paragraph
contains subscription/unsubscription info.

To subscribe to the Atlanta Prog listserv, send an email to
atlantaprog-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx and put
"subscribe" in the subject line (no quotes). To unsubscribe to the
Atlanta Prog listserv, send an email to
atlantaprog-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx and put "unsubscribe" in the
subject line (no quotes). It's as simple as that.

You may also go to freelists.org and subscribe/unsubscribe from
there, as well as change your setting (for instance, you can select
"digest mode" which means you'll get all messages posted to the
listserv in one daily email digest instead of a lot of individual
emails). When you arrive at the welcome screen, look for the "log-in"
button. Click that and you will be given a screen that asks for your
email address and password. If you've never logged in before, you
obviously won't have a password. That's OK. Just put in you e-mail
address and leave the password field blank. They will then send a
log-in code to your email address which you can then use to get into
the site.

Once you're in, you'll see a long list of lists. Scroll down until
you see "atlantaprog", then click the "select list" button at the
bottom. You will then be in a screen that allows you to make changes
to your
settings - from there you're on your own! It is pretty self-explanatory though.

IF YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS CHANGES, PLEASE TAKE IT UPON YOURSELF
TO "UNSUBSCRIBE" YOUR OLD ADDRESS AND "SUBSCRIBE" YOUR NEW ADDRESS!

Another thing to be aware of - all listserv traffic is permanently
archived on the freelists.org site, AND these archives are available
to the public. Therefore, you probably won't want to use the listserv
for sensitive, confidential discussion (actually, you probably
wouldn't want to use
e-mail for sensitive, confidential discussions either!). To access
the archives, go back to the
freelists.org home page and look for a link that says "freelists
archives". That will take you there.

For the sake of the archives - I am pasting the email I sent out last
night into this message. I will omit the list of e-mail addresses
however, so spammers won't be able to get them! If you retained the
email I sent yesterday, you should still have everyone's address.
(hint - if you need to post an e-mail address to the listserv, use
the word "AT" instead of "@", and "DOT" instead of "." - example:
atlantaprog AT freelists DOT org. Since these messages are in an
archive that's accessible to the public, this will prevent automated
"spam-bots" from harvesting the address.)

Thanks,

AWG

Hi,

If I may say so, the first meeting of the Atlanta Progressive Music
Support Group was a resounding success. Many good ideas were put
forward, and lots of good energy filled the air. I believe that with
our combined efforts, we will make Atlanta a true hotbed of
progressive music!

The following are the people who attended to initial meeting of this
yet-to-be-named group (name suggestions, anyone?)...

Allen Welty-Green - Z-Axis, etc.
Harold Timms - Z-Axis, etc.
Sean Tonar - Mindworm, Progressiveears.com (message board), etc.
Greg Stafford - theprogpalace.com (internet radio)
Brandi Byrum - Cobweb Strange
Holly Williams - Cobweb Strange
Wade Summerlin - Cobweb Strange
Mike Wilkes - Ultima Thule
Bob Hudson - Ultima Thule
Steve Carroll - Man on Fire
Bill Kargel - Paracelsus, etc.
Alex Filacchione - Brain21
Ken MacLeish
Dave Siff - Paine's Promise
Veronica Hughes - Paine's Promise

The following are people who have expressed interest in the group,
but were unable to attend for one reason or another:

Chris Hosford
Paul Schumacher
Ilja Moston aka Alien
Paul Cashman - DragonCon, WREK, Progpower
Chip Epsten - Sundog
Amazing Lizardos
Wheat Williams
Mark Baker - Z-Axis, etc.
Jeff Tyson - Z-Axis
Beth Ann

I have set up an email list at freelists.org. The address will be
atlantaprog@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Once the list becomes active in a day or
two, I will subscribe all of the above people (unless you tell me
otherwise). This list will be used to discuss the various activities
of the group. It will only be open to people who have an active
interest in promoting and nurturing the progressive music scene in
Atlanta (i.e. it won't just be a "fan" list).

Here are the "minutes" of the meeting as compiled by Harold Timms and
augmented by yours truly:

Action Items:

AWG to contact Steve Harris @ Variety PH to discuss possibility of
hosting a prog fest at a future date (format TBD).
AWG to distribute a complete email list of all attendees to all attendees.
AWG to contact WRFG and find out what it would take to get a prog
radio show on the air.

Sean to ask the progressiveears.com webmaster if creating an
Atlanta-only bulletin board is possible within the Progressiveears
structure.
Sean to contact Rob LaDuca (organizer of NEARfest) and Peter Renfro
(organizer of Prog Day) to seek guidance in organizing an Atlanta
prog event

Harold (and AWG?) to contact Earthshaking music about the possibility
of them hosting an ongoing monthly 3-4 band prog series.

  Thoughts and comments:

The attendees had various opinions about:

* Festival particulars: 1 or 2-day, Scope (regional, nat'l?),
location(s), methodology of how to generate funding (bands
investing, sponsorships, a solid, well thought-out business plan,
etc.).
* What is the Atlanta prog demographic?
* How best to identify the demographic and how to motivate and expand
the demographic.
* Just what in the heck is "Progressive Music" anyway?
* What sort of radio presence, if any, is possible? How to get it.
* The unsuitability of clubs as a venue for this type of music, and
the need to identify other types of venues (galleries, the "jam-band"
circuit", etc.).

The attendees had a general consensus about:

* A need to identify and motivate the prog demographic within the
Atlanta region.
* Some sort of musical event promoting prog is needed in the Atlanta area.
* The value of sharing resources (contacts, gig leads, etc.) and
cross promotions to each other's lists.
* The value of continuing this group.

Some Random Thoughts and comments:

* Greg mentioned promoting local events on his internet radio show
and discussed the current internet radio crisis. Also offered live
streaming for the potential festival.
* Wade discussed the creation of a compilation CD. Others discussed
possible distribution through Progression and/or Expose magazines and
as handouts at major prog shows in town.
* Steve offered the Man on Fore studio for recording/mastering of a
compilation CD.
* Everyone seemed to appreciate the opportunity to hear each other's
music, and to meet and converse with other like-minded people.
* Someone needs to emerge who is willing to help produce and/or DJ a
prog radio show at a college station or WRFG.

Some parting thoughts - I can envision a scenario where we begin a
series of monthly progressive shows at Earthshaking (or somewhere)
featuring a rotating line up of diverse local acts, and an occasional
regional band. These shows, augmented by an emerging radio and
internet presence, begin to build a momentum, leading to an annual
festival that will help galvanize the whole local scene. The action
step outlined in the minutes are a good start towards this scenario
coming to fruition. Let's hope we can keep up our momentum. As soon
as some concrete things begin to take root, it is my intention to
contact the media (CL, AJC) so we can start getting the word out to
the public.

Please spread the word about this group to all who may be interested.
The next meeting is set for Monday, Dec. 2nd, 7 pm at the same place.
I hope we outgrow that little room soon!

AWG
