By the way, the very night of the Rick Wakeman show, when I got home I
went to the Apple iTunes Music Store and purchased and downloaded "The
Six Wives of Henry VIII" and "Myths and Legends of King Arthur" in
their entirety for $8 and $7 respectively. What I got was somewhat
better than MP3 quality and no liner notes, but you can't beat the
convenience factor and the impluse-buy-enticement. The price was good,
too.
There are three and a half Wakeman albums on iTunes. I already owned
"Return to the Centre of the Earth" (the new 90s album, not the 70s
album) on CD. And at the show I bought the new DVD of a 1975
performance of "Journey to the Centre of the Earth".
Apple iTunes and its competitors have a ways to go to tweak the
business model, but it's a great start.
And please note that you can download the iTunes software for free and
use it on Windows as well as Mac, either stand-alone (rip your own CDs
into MP3s for use with any MP3 player; mine is a Creative Nomad
Jukebox) or with the iTunes Music Store to purchase content you can
download from the Internet.
If you haven't checked it out, you should, particularly if you have a
DSL connection.
