[atlantaprog] Alternate Reality Radio (this weeks theme)

This weeks theme will be about an alternate reality. A world in which clear
channel and controlling interest nazi's of the like never got the chance to
sap the energies of a free radio world. The idea: What if Prog got the kind
of play it deserved on FM radio? Or alternatively, what if a time vortex
opened up and you were able to send todays neo-prog into the golden age of
rock radio? What songs would you pick as possible hits? What new prog is
hooky enough to grab the attention of the radio audience? What, in essence
would our radio be playing if there was no bias against prog music.

This idea comes to us from Greg Jones of Pinnacle, and I think it is a great
theme to play with. Here is Greg's quote to sum it up:

"I had an idea for a show "theme" and thought I'd share it with
you - if you don't want to do it, I'd understand. Just wanted to share
the idea.

All prog fans lament the fact that our stuff once ruled the airwaves
(or at least held its own with all the other stuff) - and I always
hear progfans complain about new stuff that comes out and doesn't get
any airplay in today's market. Who among us HASN'T said or thought
"Why, THAT song is SO HOOKY, that if they only LET the public HEAR it,
the band would be HUGE and start having HITS!"

SO, in that vein, I suggest a show of the songs by prog bands that
we're sure - S U R E - would be unbelievably giant hits if the
radio got behind them.

Don't know what you call a show like that - Playing Hooky? Pitching A
No-Hitter? Give Piece a Chance? We'd PAY You To PLAY These? I don't
know - it's just a thought.

The songs that IMMEDIATELY spring to mind? How about:

Spock's Beard - June, Waste Away, Carie, Thoughts Pt II, etc.

King's X - Goldilox, Summerland, The Groove Machine

Porcupine Tree- Trains

IZZ - I Wanna Win, Spinnin' Round, The Weight Of It All, Abby's Song,
My River Flows, etc.

King Crimson - Prozack Blues, Dinosaur, People, Into The Frying Pan,
Indiscipline (! ), Matte Kudasai

The Dixie Dregs - Crank It Up, Ridin' High, Vitamin Q, Conversation
Piece

The Steve Morse Band - Book Of Dreams, Ghostwind, Stand Up

Dream Theater - I Walk Beside You, The Spirit Carries On, Surrounded

Jan Hammer & Jerry Goodman - Country And Eatern Music (you just KNEW
I'd say THAT one again)

Anyway, you get the idea - thanks for listening, and if you like it
and want to, go for it."

So, what say you good people? Your ideas are welcome and I will sift
through it all and try to create a set of music that would attune the public
to the hidden pleasures of prog. I look forward to your suggestions!

Woody
