I'm convinced the first step in this will be no more physical promo copies to
radio stations and media outlets.
Instead, people in the business will be afforded a one-time, password protected
download of an upcoming release (music, artwork, etc.). The music files will
not be at full CD quality either, except for places like X-M, Sirius,
cable-radio services and other top-end digital broadcasters.
I received two new recordings like this already from one independent label. My
promos were only available to me as mp3's at 96kbps, as we transmit at 56k &
24k. Was told no physical promos will be offered to us. If I wanted a CD
quality copy of the disc, I have to buy it retail like everyone else.
This way, all their promo base costs them is some server time and some
automatic settings. No mailing costs, no physical production costs, etc.
No big deal to me, because I support independent labels and artists and buy
about 50% of what we air. But if the majors start doing this, FM stations who
are running about 128k on files for transmissions will go nuts.
